A new US law targeting Russia’s energy trade has put India’s Russian crude purchases under fresh scrutiny. President Donald Trump has signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, giving the US administration authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods from countries that rank among the largest buyers of Russian oil or natural gas. The legislation does not automatically impose a 100% tariff on India, but creates a legal pathway for such action.India is closely watching the development because Russian crude has become a major part of the country’s energy supply. Recent data has put Russia’s share at more than 40% of India’s crude supplies, while July saw Russian crude account for more than half of India’s imports. The move could have implications for India-US trade negotiations, energy costs, crude sourcing and the wider global oil market. New Delhi has said it remains committed to energy security and will take measures to protect its trade and economic interests n18oc_world
