Semenya hearing ends, decision in 'pivotal' case late March

Feb 23, 2019

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Caster Semenya was given "the last word" when a weeklong hearing at sport's highest court ended Friday, and her decade-long battle with track and field's ruling body neared a conclusion. The two-time Olympic 800-meter champion from South Africa appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the IAAF's proposed hormone regulations, which would require Semenya and other female athletes with naturally high levels of testosterone to lower them through medication to compete at world-class events. The regulations would apply to events from 400 meters to one mile, the range of distances Semenya competes in. The Swiss-based...

Canada's energy regulator endorses contentious pipeline

Feb 23, 2019

TORONTO — Canada's energy regulator endorsed a contentious Trans Mountain pipeline expansion on Friday that would almost triple the flow of oil from the Alberta oil sands to the Pacific Coast. The National Energy Board said the expansion is in the country's national interest, but set out 16 new conditions after a court found it had not properly determined how killer whales would be affected by additional tanker traffic. The court also said there had been insufficient consultation with indigenous communities. As oil flow increases from 300,000 to 890,000 barrels per day, tanker traffic will balloon from about 60 vessels...

Vandals paint swastikas on buildings in Amsterdam

Feb 23, 2019

AMSTERDAM — Vandals suspected of being soccer hooligans from The Hague have painted graffiti including swastikas and anti-Semitic texts on buildings in Amsterdam. The graffiti was discovered Friday, ahead of Sunday's Dutch league match between ADO The Hague and Ajax, which is based in Amsterdam. Ajax is often portrayed as a club with historic links to Amsterdam's Jewish community. A statue in Amsterdam that commemorates a general strike in 1941 to protest the rounding up of Jews by Nazi occupiers of the city during World War II was vandalized with green and yellow paint — the colors of ADO The...

Feb 23, 2019

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — A 22-year-old Swede was sentenced Friday to four and a half years in prison after he was convicted of stealing 17th-century Swedish royal treasures estimated to be worth 65 million kronor ($7 million) from a cathedral last year. The Eskiltuna District Court said Johan Nicklas Backstrom stole two crowns and an orb used at the funerals of King Karl IX and Queen Kristina. The jewels, dating from 1611, had been on display in Strangnas Cathedral, west of Stockholm. On the closing day of his trial last week, Backstrom confessed to stealing the items on July 31. His...

China says coal handling delayed by environmental checks

Feb 23, 2019

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — China said Friday that reported delays in handling of coal shipments from Australia were due to stepped up inspections to protect the environment. "In recent years, China Customs has found that some of the imported coal didn't meet our environmental protection standards when it carried out inspection and testing on safety and quality risks of the imported coal," Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters during a routine briefing in Beijing. Customs officials had strengthened quality and safety inspections of imported coal "in accordance with relevant laws and regulations" to better protect Chinese importers and ensure...
